Emblemaria pandionis – Sailfin Blenny

The Sailfin Blenny is an interesting choice for well-structured marine aquariums. It prefers an environment with plenty of hiding spots, stable water parameters, and peaceful tank mates. Due to its small size and fascinating behavior, it makes a captivating addition to medium-sized aquariums.

Sailfin Blennies inhabit clear, shallow waters along rocky shores and coral reefs at depths of up to 30 meters. They are often found in abandoned wormholes, crevices, or holes in coral fragments.

The Sailfin Blenny often rests in its shelter, propped up on its elongated pelvic fins. This shy species only leaves the safety of its hideout for short periods.

Male Sailfin Blennies should be kept singly unless the aquarium is large enough for them to avoid each other. Multiple females, however, can be housed together without issues.

The Sailfin Blenny is a carnivore that feeds on small invertebrates and plankton. Its diet includes copepods, amphipods, isopods, decapods, stomatopods, mysis, and other small crustaceans. It readily accepts all types of offered food.

In tanks with large, dominant fish, it tends to remain shy, while in smaller tanks with gentle tank mates, it is often seen actively exploring.

Important for the Care of Corals and Fish

Maintaining consistent salinity is crucial, along with using high-quality sea salt, such as Fauna Marin Professional Sea Salt.

The salinity should always remain between 34/35 parts per thousand, or a specific gravity of 1.022 to 1.024. Regularly checking the specific gravity is an absolute must in marine aquariums.
